Project Summary

Not every roofing project fits neatly into the standard replacement mold. When Steve called Moss Roofing about water damage on his porch roof and a deteriorating barn roof, he had two separate structures with two separate problems — but one solution that made sense for both. This project is a strong example of how a standing seam metal roof can solve real structural problems, deliver long-term performance, and do it with a visual result that genuinely elevates the property. Both structures were completed in a single day.

The Challenge

Steve reached out about two distinct roofing concerns on his Bloomington property. The first was water damage on the porch roof attached to his home. The second was a deteriorating roof on a detached barn on the same property. Both had been declining for a while, and both needed more than a patch.

What made this project interesting was the opportunity it presented. These weren’t just two failing roofs — they were two structures that, handled correctly, could be tied together visually and upgraded to a roofing system built to last decades without the maintenance headaches that come with traditional asphalt shingles.

Our Solution

Our inspection of both structures revealed the full picture of what Steve was dealing with.

On the Porch Roof

We found rotten decking, rotting fascia, creased shingles, and nail pops throughout. Nail pops occur when nails work their way out of the decking over time — a sign that the underlying structure had been compromised by moisture and age. The water damage had worked its way into the decking to the point where it needed to be fully replaced before any new roofing materials could go down. A surface-level repair wasn’t an option here.

On the Barn Roof

The shingles had deteriorated all the way down to the fiberglass mat — the structural layer beneath the granule surface of an asphalt shingle. When shingles reach this point, they have no weather resistance left. The mineral granules on the surface of the shingle that help shield it from UV exposure and water had worn away completely, leaving the bare mat exposed to the elements. This roof was well past its service life.

After walking through the full scope of findings with Steve, we discussed his options. He decided to go with a standing seam concealed fastener metal roof on both structures — a smart choice for several reasons. The porch roof, now finished in Evergreen Frost standing seam panels, gives the front of the home a sharp architectural accent that stands out. The detached barn was finished to match, tying the two structures together visually and giving the entire property a cohesive, upgraded look.

Because of the extent of the water damage, the decking on the porch roof was fully replaced as part of the project before the metal panels went on. The rotting fascia was addressed as well, giving the new roof a clean, solid foundation.

Materials Used

Standing Seam Concealed Fastener 26-Gauge Metal Roofing in Evergreen Frost

Standing seam metal roofing is one of the most durable roofing systems available for residential and agricultural structures. The concealed fastener design means no exposed screws or nails — fasteners are hidden beneath the raised seams of each panel, eliminating the most common point of failure on exposed fastener metal roofs. The 26-gauge steel is a heavy, commercial-grade panel thickness that resists denting, wind uplift, and long-term weathering. Evergreen Frost is a clean, architectural color that works beautifully as a porch accent and translates equally well to agricultural structures like barns.

Process

Inspection and Consultation

Our inspection covered both the porch roof and the barn roof in full. We documented the rotten decking, rotting fascia, nail pops, and creased shingles on the porch, and confirmed the full granule loss on the barn shingles. After presenting Steve with our findings, we walked him through his options — including the standing seam metal roofing system that made the most sense for both structures.

Decking and Fascia Replacement

Before metal panels could go onto the porch roof, the compromised decking and rotting fascia had to come out. This is a non-negotiable step — installing any new roofing system over damaged decking undermines the entire installation. The new decking gave the standing seam panels a solid, stable substrate to fasten to.

Standing Seam Metal Roof Installation

With the decking addressed, both the porch roof and the barn roof were completed in a single day. The standing seam panels in Evergreen Frost were installed on both structures, with the concealed fastener system applied throughout for a clean finish and long-term watertight performance.

Results & Benefits

Steve’s property now has two metal roofs that are built to outlast anything asphalt could have provided. Standing seam metal roofing carries an expected service life of 40–70 years with minimal maintenance — compared to 15–25 years for a standard asphalt shingle roof. The concealed fastener system means there are no exposed screws to back out, no rubber washers to dry out, and no penetration points to seal and re-seal over time.

The visual result is equally as strong. The Evergreen Frost standing seam panels on the porch roof give the home an architectural pop that a standard shingle roof simply can’t deliver. The matching finish on the barn unifies the property and gives the whole place a clean, intentional look.

And it was all done in a day.

“Michael Apple and Moss Roofing gave us great service. Mike was on-site both days of our metal roof installation. Communications were never a problem. We were very pleased.” — Steve H., Bloomington, IN

Special Features

Standing Seam Metal Roofing — Why It Outperforms Asphalt Long-Term

Standing seam metal roofing and asphalt shingles aren’t really competing products — they’re in different performance categories. A standard asphalt shingle roof is designed to last 15–25 years under normal conditions. When installed the right way, a standing seam metal roof is designed to last 40–70 years, requires significantly less maintenance, and holds up better against wind, hail, and UV exposure over time. For a homeowner planning to stay in their home long-term, or one who simply doesn’t want to think about replacing their roof again, metal is a compelling option. The higher upfront investment pays for itself over the life of the system.

Concealed Fastener vs. Exposed Fastener Metal Roofing

There are two main types of metal roofing systems: concealed fastener and exposed fastener. Exposed fastener systems use screws that penetrate the face of the metal panel and are visible on the finished roof. Over time, the rubber washers beneath those screws become brittle, split, and let moisture work its way inside around the fastener. Concealed fastener standing seam systems hide all fasteners beneath the raised seams of adjacent panels — meaning there are no exposed penetration points on the surface of the roof at all. This is a more durable, more watertight, and more visually refined system, and it’s what we installed on both of Steve’s structures.

When Decking Replacement Is Non-Negotiable

Homeowners sometimes ask whether decking replacement is really necessary, or whether new materials can simply go over the existing damaged substrate. The honest answer is no. Decking is the structural foundation that everything else is fastened to. Rotten or water-damaged decking doesn’t hold fasteners correctly, compromises the stability of the new roof, and will continue to deteriorate beneath the new installation — eventually causing the same problems all over again. When our inspection finds decking damage, we replace it. There’s no shortcut here that doesn’t cost the homeowner more money later.

Metal Roofing as an Architectural Accent

One of the underappreciated benefits of metal roofing on residential structures is the design opportunity it creates. A standing seam metal roof on a porch, a shed dormer, a garage, or a secondary structure can add significant architectural character to a home in a way that asphalt shingles simply can’t replicate. The clean lines of the standing seam profile and the depth of color in a finish like Evergreen Frost read as a deliberate design choice, not just a functional covering. If you’ve been looking for a way to add curb appeal to your home while upgrading to a more durable roofing system, a metal accent roof is worth exploring.

What Fiberglass Mat Exposure Means on an Asphalt Shingle Roof

An asphalt shingle is made up of a fiberglass mat base, an asphalt layer, and a surface coating of protective granules. The granules do two things: protect the asphalt layer from UV degradation and provide the shingle’s weather-shedding surface. When granules wear away completely — as they had on Steve’s barn roof — the bare fiberglass mat is left exposed to direct sun and rain. At this stage, the shingle has no meaningful weather resistance remaining. UV exposure begins breaking down the mat itself, and water infiltration accelerates rapidly. A roof in this condition is not a candidate for repair. It needs to be replaced.
