Shingles

Flashings
Any experienced roofer will explain that flashings are pieces of metal that waterproof seams and gaps in your roof. They cover the valleys, (the points where two sloped roofs meet) and the penetrations, such as chimneys and exhaust vents. When installed properly, they use gravity to channel the water down and keep the places they protect free from moisture. They don’t live forever, though; they ought to be addressed immediately the moment they begin to crack.
Fascia Boards
The fascia is what holds the gutter system in place. Although the drip edge separates them from gutters and downspouts, poor drainage can cause the water to reach it. Since fascia boards are generally made from wood, they’re not immune to decay. When they rot, they can render the gutters structurally unsound.
Soffits
Known as the finished surfaces below the fascia, any seasoned roofing company would attest that soffits contribute to curb appeal and attic ventilation. They have small holes your roof uses to breathe in fresh drafts and expel moist air. Like fascia boards, however, they’re also made from lumber, which doesn’t mix well with water.
