When do you roll out your pumpkin spice candles? When is the best time to plant grass seed? When do you clean vinyl siding? The changing seasons bring plenty of questions for Indianapolis-area homeowners.
Both pumpkin spice and grass seed are annual highlights. Getting your vinyl siding cleaned should be an annual event, too. Why so often? Vinyl siding is resilient, wonderful stuff, but it can attract dirt, algae, and moss. An annual exterior cleaning and TLC will keep your siding looking fresh.
Some homeowners even consider twice-yearly cleaning, which is also fine. You will not wear out the siding by cleaning it in early spring and early fall. An early spring cleaning gets all the winter wear off your home. A fall cleaning prepares your siding for tough weather months ahead.
Some folks are eager to clean their Indianapolis-area home’s vinyl siding because it is an excuse to crank up the pressure washer. Consider, though, what your siding protects:
- Your home’s vapor barrier
- Exterior rigid insulation
- Loose fill or batt insulation
- Drywall interior surfaces
- Your furnishings, personal keepsakes, furniture, clothing, artwork, tools, toys, and jewelry
Consider, what would your home be without its siding? Wind, rain, snow and ice could all sweep in, finding entrance between sheathing and saturating insulation. Your house would become a soggy mess in days. So respect your vinyl siding, and do not subject it to the pressure washer!
The correct way to perform spring or fall siding maintenance is with a long-handled auto washing brush, a bucket of water, a few squirts of dish soap, a ladder, and plenty of elbow grease. Wash downward and rinse gently to prevent water seeping past the vinyl siding sections.
Pressure washers will push water in behind the vinyl siding, causing water infiltration and setting up ideal conditions for mold and mildew in your walls. Yuck!
Spring or fall are good times to perform this work because the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. In hotter weather, sudsy water can dry on your house before you are able to rinse. In colder weather, your hands suffer. Please contact us today at Moss Roofing. We are your Indianapolis-area experts on vinyl siding, fiber cement siding, roofing, and other residential features.
