When Should You Have Your Shingles Repaired?

Your roofing system is critical for keeping your home safe from the elements. Even with regular maintenance, your roof will eventually need repairs or replacement.

Knowing whether to repair or replace your roof can be confusing. At Moss Roofing, we understand the frustration of not knowing if you should have your roof repaired or replaced and what else may need to be done.

Start With an Inspection

Most shingle roofs are designed to last around 20 years under normal conditions. However, even in ideal conditions, you may occasionally have a small failure such as a shingle blown off in a storm or flashing damage after a cold winter. This is normal and often easily repaired.

In fact, if your roof still has 10 to 15 years of usable life left in it, repairs can help it last its entire lifespan. While it is never recommended you get up on the roof if you are not a professional, there are signs you can see from the ground and inside your home which may indicate you need repairs.

  • Shingles are curled, cracked, or missing
  • Lots of granules in your gutters

Shingles are dark, dirty, or wet

  • Wear and tear around roof objects, such as vents or chimneys
  • Staining on interior walls or ceilings
  • Leaks in the attic after a storm

If you notice any of these signs, the next step is to contact a roofing professional for a more thorough inspection.

Scheduling Repairs

Once you’ve had your roof professionally inspected, your contractor can advise you as to the extent of the damage and the next steps to take. Most roofing contractors are busiest in the spring and fall so if the damage is minor it might be possible to schedule the work during a slower time. If however, the damage is more extensive, it’s best to book your repair as soon as possible to prevent any further damages. If you live in the greater Indianapolis, IN area give the experts at Moss Roofing a call for all your roofing related needs.
